Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature and position of inclusions, as well as how these affect the overall appearance of the stone. Although no diamond is perfectly pure, the fewer inclusions the stone has, the higher its value.
Inclusions can look like crystals, clouds, or tiny feathers.
A scale of purity has been established in order to classify the diamond according to its degree of purity:
-
FL or IF (Flawless or Internally Flawless): No inclusions under 10x magnifying glass
-
VVS1 / VVS2 (Very Very Small Inclusions): Tiny inclusions very difficult to see with a 10x magnifying glass
-
VS1 / VS2 (Very Small Inclusions): Very small inclusions that are difficult to see with a 10x magnifying glass
-
SI1 / SI2 (Small Inclusions): Small inclusions easily visible with a 10x magnifying glass
-
P1 or I1 (pique 1 or Imperfect 1): Inclusions very easily visible with a 10x magnifying glass, difficult to see with the naked eye and not affecting the gloss
-
P2 or I2 (pique 2 or Imperfect 2): Large and / or numerous inclusions easily visible to the naked eye and slightly affecting the shine
-
P3 or I3 (pique 3 or Imperfect 3): Large and / or numerous inclusions very easily visible to the naked eye and distinctly affecting the shine
These inclusions are so small that they are hardly visible to the eye of a non-expert. A VS1 diamond and an SI2 diamond may look exactly the same, but will be very different in terms of overall quality.
